I do not ever remember a Southwest Kansas August with rain showers every couple days. Along with the rain has come cooler temps, under 100 degrees, and a few days dipping to the 70s for the highs. Let me just say, this is quite unusual, yet such a blessing! Although our three year drought is not technically over, this month of rain has greened the landscape.
Did you know there was a three year drought recorded in the Bible? This drought was immediate and extreme. There was no rain and no dew. The King sent his servants to scout the land for springs and valleys that might have enough water and grass to keep the animals alive. Throughout this time, the king and his people continually turned their backs on God choosing to worship idols instead. In the third year of drought, Elijah, Prophet of God, challenged the king’s prophets of Baal, the king’s god. This challenge would prove who was the One True God. By the end of the challenge, the people ‘fell face down on the ground and cried out, “The LORD—he is God! Yes, the LORD is God!”‘ (1Kings 18:39) Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel, bent down to the ground and began to pray. Elijah had his servant look toward the sea several times, but there was nothing there. Finally, the seventh time, the servant reported that he saw a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea. “And soon the sky was black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm.” (1Kings 18:45)
One small cloud… Many times Hubby and I have watched for that one small cloud. Sometimes we would see one, and it would build to beautiful thunderheads, and go around us never spilling a single raindrop. However, God has been forming clouds and dumping rain every few days this August 2013. Thank you, God!! Could this be the end of our three year drought?
