Tiny Treasure

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Have you been counting your blessings? Some of you will remember the Joy Dare I completed last year counting over 1,000 gifts from God throughout the year. Designed by Ann Voskamp with very specific gifts to look for, I was challenged to look outside the box and beyond the obvious. This challenge changed my outlook in many ways, including looking for the blessing in the most difficult eucharisteo.  The eucharisteo that normally would make me ask, “How can there be any good blessing in this trial?” The Joy Dare also caused me to look for blessings in the smallest, minute things.

For my personal devotions, I’ve been reading the devotional book “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young.  This month she too has focused on giving thanks to God. She writes in first person as if Jesus is speaking directly to the reader, which makes the scripture very personal in a way I have not experienced before. One day’s writing begins, “As you sit quietly in My presence, let ME fill your heart and mind with thankfulness.” What a way to jump start the day focusing on God and his faithfulness, and then giving thanks to Him throughout the day! Today’s reading gives this challenge:

“As you go through this day, look for tiny treasures strategically placed along the way. I lovingly go before you and plant little pleasures to brighten your day.”

Yes, indeed! He did, and I found it! Who helped God strategically place it, I may never know. This blessing has most likely been there for years without my noticing, and had I noticed when my kids were young I probably would have missed the blessing.  My response would have not been the laughter that welled up in me, nor the fun group texting among the family. No, I would have been upset. and if no one fessed up, all four would have been in trouble! You see, I have never been a fan of carved-in-wood graffiti, especially when it is my wood floor!!

This tiny little message is only two letters and 1/2″ x 1/2″. I discovered it carved into the floor of my upstairs hall. I have mopped that floor umpteen times through the years, yet this is the FIRST time I have ever noticed it. I do believe God has a sense of humor to give me this little greeting to brighten the day. This once too noisy home is now sometimes too silent even when I’m cleaning for a visit from my grown family. This little ‘hi’, sent me back to days gone by filled with the laughter of three ornery boys and their just as ornery sister. What sweet memories! What a blessing!

Today, I am thankful for this tiny scratched message. Though it has been in plain sight all these years, God knew the perfect time to let me discover it.

2012 Glimpses of Blessings

2012 has been a year that I have intentionally looked for, took notice of, and gave God praise for His abundant blessings. It was not a year perfect in every way, yett even in the difficult times God was ever present. I welcome 2013 and can’t wait to see what God has in store. To God be the Glory!

10 Things…

Isn’t God amazing! He blesses us over and over even when we don’t deserve it or take time to notice. Ten things I recognize as gifts of blessing to begin this month are:
Apple Picking is one of my favorite things about Fall. Picking on Monday took me down memory lane as I thought of all the times My Children and I picked at the local orchard. I couldn’t help smiling as I heard Laughter from excited youngsters hidden behind a row of trees laden with gorgeous, juicy apples.
A Dear Friend is a grandma again. This New Life is a handsome little boy.
God has allowed me to hang out with and minister to several Young Ladies. I love watching how they grow and mature in life and in their relationship with God. It also helps keep me young. 🙂
A Garden that is still producing! Will it get zapped by frost by weeks end?
This morning my phone chimed with a new text message…a LOVE Note from my hubby. ❤
It took a 30 year reunion to Rekindle Friendships~ Sally and Shelly, I am so excited that we have reconnected!
The Desire to learn and grow. Sometimes it is easier to simply let life happen, and I have spent too many years of my life doing that. Yes, the desire to learn and grow is a blessing from the Lord, and I have so much yet to learn.

I continue on this journey of intentionally counting 1000 Gifts in 2012- The Joy Dare. If you are not in the practice of intentionally looking for God’s blessings I’d encourage you to begin today. If you would like to follow the list I’m using for October click HERE. A few gifts we’ll look for are: 3 gifts prayed for, a gift baked/stirred/eaten, 3 gifts on time, a gift surrendered.

How is God blessing you this week? I’d love for you to leave a comment and share your joy!

June Gifts of Joy

Can you believe 2012 is half over already?! The past six months, I’ve seen God and His blessings in some very unexpected ways.  Counting 1000 Gifts in 2012 – The Joy Dare continues to open my eyes.

Some gifts of joy for the month of June were:

  • A gift in conversation – family devotions on the beach.
  • A gift ugly beautiful – new grass shoots poking through blackened soil from spring prairie fire.
  • A gift empty – empty arms. Though I miss cuddling my young children, I praise God for the wonderful adults they have become.
  • A gift unexpected – Rain! Glorious Rain!
  • A gift smelled – the scent of my daughter’s perfume as I walked past her room. Yes, Daughter-on-the-other-side-of-of-the-world is home!
  • 3 gifts that are difficult – 1. My sis in-law was in a head-on collision. God saved her, but she will have a long, long road to recovery. 2. Surgery for sis in-law was postponed, and she received a very disappointing prognosis. Praising God that things aren’t worse than they are. 3. Being so far away from Hubby’s family. I wish I could be there to visit, encourage, take dinner to the family…yet I can pray across the miles for my dear sis in-law.

Though we may not understand, and the road may be long and difficult; God promises to never leave or forsake us.  That alone fills me with JOY!

Won’t you join me on this Joy Dare? Start intentionally looking for God’s gifts of grace and joy today. HERE is the link for the gifts we’ll count in July. JoyDare Be blessed!
